Healthcare is undergoing change at a pace never seen before. Major breakthroughs in science, new drugs and devices, increasing rates of chronic diseases, changing regulatory environments, rapid adoption of electronic health record systems, emerging technology platforms, an explosion in data collected, emergence of evidence-based medicine and a critical focus on outcomes and costs have all combined to create an environment that places a high ask of the next generation of physician leaders.
What differentiates the winners from the rest of the pack is how leadership manages this environment. With this in mind, USF Muma College of Business and Tampa General Hospital have combined to put together a twelve month program aimed at preparing the next generation of physician leaders.
An important aspect of this program is the integration of hard and soft skills that are needed to tackle some of the most challenging problems of today. Today’s leading organizations such as Google and General Electric have embraced a culture of data-driven innovation that permeates every aspect of their organizations, while at the same time embracing the creative and soft skills needed for people to manage effectively and innovate. Most physicians by training tend to be on the more quantitative and analytical side of the management philosophy. This program will build on their strengths and help them incorporate the critical leadership, decision making and soft skills needed while retaining the analytical focus that is needed to manage in today’s environment.
Module 1 (Three Sessions) will focus on the Business of Medicine and cover important financial, regulatory, operations, and marketing skills needed to make the critical decisions needed.
- Review of concepts in financial management and accounting including budgeting, return on capital, understanding balance sheets, cash flow, debt, and different financial instruments.
- Fundamental concepts in operations management, building and managing effective supply chains, and lean and six sigma principles for operational excellence.
- Case studies of effective management in healthcare through effective financial and operational strategies.
- Strategies for effective marketing for healthcare organizations, brand management (building and strengthening the brand), foundations of customer service and quality of care, and how to be a customer-focused organization.
Module 2 (Three Sessions) will focus on Healthcare Leadership and Management Skills.
Theories of leadership and motivation, exemplars of effective leadership, the different forms of leadership, and why leaders succeed or fail.
- Building communications and soft skills critical to management, experiential exercises, role-playing, and self-reflection in leadership.
- Building and managing teams, learning to make teams more effective.
- Change management, the importance of vision, overcoming resistance during major change, and understanding the importance of measuring change.
- Understanding Project Management and its role in healthcare.
- Managing people, talent, and strategies for effective human resource management with a goal to ensuring effective recruitment and long-term retention of high performers.
Module 3 (Two Sessions) will focus on the use of Healthcare Analytics and Technology as a way to solve problems as well as address the management issues needed to effectively harness these powerful drivers. The specific topics in this module include:
- Understanding how leading organizations use data effectively to drive decisions
- Review of exemplars for using data effectively in healthcare contexts
- Understanding best practices in the use of data in healthcare.
- Understanding the emerging tools and platforms that provide data-driven decision support in healthcare.
- Trends in EMR/EHR systems and implications for management and process improvements.
Module 4 (Two Sessions) will focus on Decision Making for leaders.
- Concepts in risk – quantitative and qualitative assessment, probability, and decision analysis.
- Decision making under high-risk high uncertain environments, case studies of decision making in medicine, and other high-risk scenarios.
- Problem-solving strategies and how to build consensus and coalition for critical decisions.
- Negotiations and conflict management principles and strategies.
- Review of major leadership decision-making styles.
