Introduction to Healthcare Finance
Value-based Care, Consumerism, Fraud, Waste and Abuse! What do these buzz words have in common? This introductory healthcare finance course provides foundational understanding of these key concepts and how they are shaping the future of healthcare. We will explore the various types of healthcare payers, payment methodologies and the pitfalls most associated with the US Healthcare payment system. We will examine current developments and initiatives to address these policy concerns and debate their remediation potential.
Course Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify and explain the differences between the various types of healthcare payers in the US.
- Students will be able to describe the US healthcare system of reimbursement and explain the quality versus quantity dilemma.
- Students will be able to articulate the complexity of DRG, ICD-10 and CPT coding and relate it to current issues with reimbursement and regulatory compliance.
- Students will be able to explain alternative payment methodologies and evaluate their potential for resolving regulatory compliance and quality of care policy concerns.
